Eight teams fiercely compete in a debate tournament on topics relating to Japanese anime and manga and their fandoms. If you love to argue, this is your chance to show off your skills for prizes including the ultimate geek reward: satisfaction in always being right!
This is one of the many events Propeller Anime Club will be hosting at MegaCon 2011. This will be a collaboration with our friends at Anime Spot! Event will be from 5PM to 7PM on Friday, March 25th in W224D at the Orange County Convention Center!
Sign-ups for the event will be the table Propeller Anime Club and Anime Spot will be sharing, outside of room W224B from 1pm - 4:30pm. Sign-ups are closed once eight (8) teams have entered.
All information you need to know about the event is below.
Rules
- Debate teams will be formed before the event and will consist of three (3) members each.
- All teams must be at the event on time or they are disqualified.
- Each match will have a proposition team and an opposition team.
- Arguments in debates must be informed and use the truth.
- One person speaks for their team at a time when it is their team's turn to debate in a match.
- You can change to another speaker on your team during your turn, but you have to announce it and you can't change back.
- Speakers don't have to use their alloted speaking time, but they may not exceed it.
- Language must be kept PG. That means certain words may not be spoken.
- Name calling and insulting will not be tolerated.
- No yelling during the match or interrupting other speakers when it is their turn.
- Judges will vote on the team that did better in the match. The crowd will also make up a vote. Winning team advances the tournament.
- Topics will be related to Japanese anime, manga, and fan culture.
- Three (3) minutes for each team to construct their arguments and prepare their speaker(s)
- Three (3) minutes for opening proposition constructive speech
- Three (3) minutes for opposition constructive speech
- One (1) minute for each team to construct their rebuttal and prepare their speaker(s)
- Two (2) minutes for proposition rebuttal
- Two (2) minutes for opposition rebuttal
- Light Yagami was totally justified to use the Death Note to rid the world of criminals.
- It is totally plausible for teenagers to pilot giant robots without any training or instruction.
- "Axis Powers Hetalia" adequately teaches world history.
- Japanese manga are superior to western comic books.
- Classic shonen anime of the 80s and 90s are superior to those of today.
- After decades of creating anime, it is time for Hayao Miyazaki to retire.
- Moé anime and manga do not just promote some fetish for creepy otaku.
- "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children" showcased Square Enix's ability to produce quality anime.
- "Twilight: The Anime" would rejuvenate the anime industry in America.
- Streaming services such as Crunchyroll and Hulu have killed the need to torrent anime.
- Cosplay promotes anime and manga more than any aspect of a convention.
- It can only be anime if it comes from Japan; therfore "Avatar: The Last Airbender" and "Teen Titans" are not anime.
- It's okay to pirate anime and manga because it supports their respective industries.
- Back up your arguments with facts and examples.
- Using hatred or insults as part of your argument will hurt you.
- It's better to end you argument early than to fill out time by repeating yourself.
- When preparing rebuttals, think about counter arguments the other team will make.
- Make sure that your team is balanced with people who are knowledgeable and can speak publicly.
- Be passionate in your argument.
